The veteran actor plays power players in two new high-profile series—and didn’t have to audition for either.as Kate Wyler, a no-nonsense career foreign service officer suddenly appointed ambassador to the UK. McKean is her boss: a–esque president with a female vice president and a party that just lost the House. In the gender-swapped remake of thedoes double duty as Elliot and Beverly Mantle, polar-opposite identical twin gynecologists who open a private reproductive practice.
McKean could relate to Rayburn’s mordant wit as the president complains to Hal that he’d rather be dead than unable to eat carbs, and sends staff scrambling when he doesn’t follow doctors’ orders. “It’s not that deep a secret for men my age,” he explains, “He develops a kind of gallows humor about life and death…. And he’s amused by the fact that people are trying to keep him alive.”’ creepy, bow-tie-wearing Dr. Marion James shares that nothing-left-to-lose attitude.
“There was something kind of off about him [that] was really fun to play,” says McKean about the doctor Rebecca calls a “fucking psycho,” who has treated his own daughters and insists on making the C-section incision into the one about to deliver quadruplets. “He sees himself as a great savior…with some god-given wisdom and judgment.” It’s no accident that the character shares a name with the so-called father of gynecology, J.
Both series’ stars were much more down to earth. “I don’t think she knows how to make a misstep,” McKean says of Russell, with whom he filmed in London. It was similarly “easy as pie” to shoot scenes with Weisz multiple times at a Long Island house for—even when the home’s sound system suddenly began blaring disco music at two in the morning. “I got to sit, like, three feet away from Rachel Weisz [doing] these twocomplicated women, and they were there,” he says in awe.
