At a meeting led by Russia’s Lavrov, Thomas-Greenfield calls for release of Wall Street Journal reporterUNITED NATIONS—A senior U.S. diplomat demanded Moscow free Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and another detained American at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council led by her Russian counterpart.

Mr. Lavrov lifted his left hand briefly after Ms. Thomas-Greenfield’s appeal but passed much of her remarks looking at papers. Elizabeth Whelan, the sister of Paul Whelan, who the U.S. considers to be wrongfully detained in Russia, at the U.N.Ms. Whelan told journalists at the U.N. before the meeting that her brother and Mr. Gershkovich are part of an “escalating series of wrongful detentions” that Russia is using to extract concessions from Washington.
