Ford Mustang Dark Horse R arrives with its own one-make series.
cars. The Dark Horse R is intended to be a slightly more approachable car than the full-blown IMSA regulars, retaining quite a lot of hardware from the road car. Dark Horse R utilizes a standard body-in-white from Flat Rock Assembly, as well as the Dark Horse’s 5.0-liter Gen IV Coyote V-8 and Tremec six-speed manual gearbox. The parts remain mostly stock, with the Coyote receiving a motorsports oil pan and upgraded cooling. A Borla exhaust system and a trans cooler round out powertrain tweaks.
The interior of the Mustang Dark Horse R ditches any trace of its roadgoing namesake. A racing seat from Recaro sits alone in the cabin, with a Sparco quick-release wheel just ahead of the driver. A Driver keypad and a number of buttons give you control of the car’s systems, while the MoTeC data display and logging system keep you in the loop. FIA-approved Sparco harnesses, fire suppression equipment, and a Safecraft safety net are ready in case things go wrong.
The Dark Horse R will start production soon in order to have cars ready for the debut Mustang Challenge season. The racer is slated to carry an MSRP of $145,000. That price falls right between other production-based racing machines like the
