An earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Java on Monday, leaving at least 56 people dead, around 700 injured and hundreds of buildings damaged, officials said.
The 5.6-magnitude earthquake was centered in the Cianjur area in West Java at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles, according to Indonesia’s meteorological agency. The temblor didn’t have the potential to create a tsunami, the agency said.
