Screen Rant's resident StarTrek enthusiast had a long chat with one of STarTrekProdigy's Science Advisors, Dr. Mohamed Noor (mafnoor), about Dal's genetic engineering, his work on StarTrekDiscovery and more:
Star Trek: Prodigy may be an animated series aimed at younger audiences, but the show has also been steeped in science and scientific discovery. From the USS Protostar's Proto-Drive, which contains a baby star, to Dal R'El learning he's genetically engineered, science is at the very heart of Prodigy.
In terms of credentials, I have a Ph.D. in ecology and evolution, areas of biology. And I've been a faculty member at various universities, currently a Duke University faculty member since 1998. I'm currently the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Duke University. For example, the first consulting I did was actually together with Dr. Erin Macdonald. It was about the B Burn in Star Trek: Discovery season 3. And for that one, we actually were contacted fairly early. They had already identified that there was going to be this disaster that caused dilithium to explode that it was stimulated by this person named Su'Kal. This person who was had gone through some extreme emotions, and that's what caused all dilithium to go inert.
They also brought in other consultants. There was a linguist from METI who also helped with how to translate [Species 10-C] more directly into language. I worked more on the physical biological basis, and they worked on the actual linguistics behind it. But again, it was very collaborative. We were all talking all the time, we'd have multiple Zoom chats, and different interchanges by email, and by texting. So that's the most extreme kind of scientific consulting.
But you can actually make a new species from the pieces of the genome from two ancestral species, or possibly more than two. And that seems to be a lot more like what Dal is. Actually, the nice thing about calling it hybrid speciation, as opposed to just having it be a hybrid, is Dal is actually his own kind of thing. In theory, there may be other Dals, and they're, in a sense, distinct in terms of species type from, say, human or Klingon or Vulcan.
I love the way it's actually said [in Prodigy] where Dr. Jago said I could "fix you" [to Dal]. That was very powerful. It is dangerous to say the word fix unless you're actually talking about something like legality of age of one or something like that. But that is something that I think is fairly uncontroversial to say that is a fix that most people would want and would call it a fix is an opportunity to actually have a life.
Dr. Mohamed Noor: A lot of the genetics is pretty good. I mean, when we get to evolution, that gets a little dodgy sometimes. Especially when you think about simple genetic terms, like when they talk about gene variants being dominant or recessive.
