Drivers in the City of Dothan may want to think twice before passing a school bus with its stop arm down.
“Until I started seeing videos, I had no idea that the problem of people running school buses was so prevalent,” Dothan Police Chief Will Benny said. “We’re talking about the safety of children at the end of the day, so I think this is a good program.”
In January, the school district installed Angeltrax cameras on all 89 of its buses in an effort to combat this issue. The software detects vehicles passing a stopped school bus and records the incident. If the incident is confirmed to be a stop arm violation, the owner of the vehicle receives a citation in the mail.
“We get 10% of the fines collected,” Benny said. “Those funds are earmarked for our youth programs like summer police academy and the Wiregrass Safety Academy.”
