Doorless dwelling: Attorney argues defense of premises in failed acquittal motion at Fairbanks murder trialFAIRBANKS, Alaska - A failed motion to acquit capped off day three of 47-year-old Chad Zurlo ’s second-degreeZurlo shot and killed his quasi-landlord Steven Corcoran in May 2014. The shooting took place in a doorless bedroom Zurlo was subletting inside the Gold Claim Avenue house Corcoran had been renting. Corcoran’s lease did not stipulate whether he could sublet.
Corcoran reportedly walked into the room Zurlo was renting with his girlfriend, Serena Vallier, that night, yelling at Zurlo about work and eventually voicing a death threat. “ was kind of standing like this towards me,” Zurlo said to Halbert in the 2014 interview, angling his body. Corcoran’s body was recovered with one bullet wound in the face, and the state medical examiner said he likely died instantly. Investigators did not find Corcoran with a gun, though he did own guns that were recovered from the residence. He noted Zurlo first told troopers he pulled the gun from his waist before later agreeing with what his then-girlfriend had said to law enforcement. Vallier told officers Zurlo picked up the gun from his nightstand.
