Barry Svrluga and Chelsea Janes answer your questions ahead of a World Series that has some critics unhappy with baseball’s playoff format.
Major League Baseball has invited 12 teams to the postseason for the past two years. In each of those playoffs, a team that wouldn’t have qualified for the playoffs in the old format — when there were two wild-card teams in each league rather than three — advanced to the World Series. They would be the Philadelphia Phillies a year ago and, who couldn’t win on the season’s last day to seal up the division title but have since vanquished the Rays, Orioles and Astros.
Does this seemingly random World Series matchup mean baseball’s postseason is broken? I don’t necessarily think so, but lots of people do. To discuss, I’ll be joined by Chelsea Janes, our national baseball writer, at 11 a.m. Thursday. We can take questions and suggestions about the format, but let’s talk about the series, too.
