The Texas Hill Country and Interstate 35 corridor are experiencing dramatic growth and development, satellite data shows.
Texas has seen a lot of growth in the past 20 years. Between 2000 and 2020, the state’s population grew by 40%, from 20.9 million to 29.2 million. But that growth is dwarfed by parts of the Texas Hill Country and the Interstate 35 corridor, where a nine-county swath grew by 87% in the same period. The bulk of that growth comes from Hays , Comal and Guadalupe counties. With population growth comes growth in development and infrastructure.
The database calls this densest sort of development “high-density impervious cover,” which refers to areas where 80% to 100% of the land is developed with impervious materials like concrete or blacktop. “Impervious cover” is a term used to describe surfaces that prevent water from soaking into the ground, such as roadways, building materials and parking lots.
