Stephen F. Austin’s Micah McAfoose, former Cypress Ranch Mustangs catcher and 2022...

The Cypress Ranch Mustangs are dedicating the 2022-23 season to the memory of former catcher and 2022 alum Micah McAfoose, who passed away in a car accident, Jan. 20, near Corrigan. The Cypress Ranch Mustangs were starting to get their legs underneath them, perfecting their swings and playing better defensively the first week of practice in late January before receiving difficult news.

McAfoose split time at catcher as a junior. But heading into his senior year, McAfoose asked Cephus what he needed to do to win the job. “We were very close but much closer now because we both shared that same relationship with him ,” Jackson said.“Me and Micah were very close,” Jackson said. “He was one of my best friends, so losing him was very hard for me and for my family.”

In addition to wearing special shirts and pearl necklaces as a tribute, Cephus said they are putting smiley faces on their hats to honor McAfoose and there are banners of him around home field with ‘Forever Remembered’ across the top. On the mound, the Mustangs will look to replace over 20 wins from duo Charlie Feris, last year’s district MVP who is now a kicker at Texas, and Alex Renfrow, now at Galveston College, who went 10-0 with 59 strikeouts in 56 innings.
