S.D. Tourism Authority clasps hands with Tripadvisor to reach potential vacationers from other major cities in less traditional ways
Local tourism officials are taking a bold and unconventional approach to enticing residents of the three largest U.S. cities to visit San Diego.
Channin Fulton, of San Diego, traveled to N.Y.C. to paint this mural promoting San Diego’s “Sunny Side of Things” campaign. “For me, the project felt like a love letter to my city. I’m not a native, but I’ve worked here for a long time. The more laid-back culture, the sun, weather and energy of this city is great for my mental health and my journey of self-expression.” It was an easy project, she says, because “it’s something I really genuinely believed in.”
Viewers also get a chance to enter the San Diego Sunshine Kit Sweepstakes. Winners receive a box designed by one of the muralists with a treasure trove of beach items, zoo and Legoland tickets, Petco Park tour passes, luggage tags, a plush toy and products by local companies, including Vuori clothing, 1502 Candle Co. and Chuao Chocolatier.
In 2022, San Diego had 28.8 million visitors, Kapich says. This is down from 35 million in pre-pandemic 2019. Smaller and more rural drive destinations became popular during the pandemic, but now vacationers are again traveling farther. This mural in Chicago, with a QR code space at lower left, is designed by Phoebe Cornog to lure travelers to San Diego.
