Houston quarterback Clayton Tune scored a two-point conversion on a keeper in the third overtime as the No. 24 Cougars escaped with a win over upset-minded UTSA.
Houston wide receiver Nathaniel Dell makes a catch for a 2-point conversion during overtime in an NCAA college football game against UTSA , Saturday, Sept. 3, 2022, in San Antonio. SAN ANTONIO — It was a comfy 72 degrees inside the Alamodome, but the University of Houston was sweating a 14-point deficit late in the third quarter Saturday afternoon.
“Survive,” coach Dana Holgorsen said. “This is a hard opener, man. This is a quality opponent. This is a quality win on the road.”And it was anything but easy for the Cougars, who rallied from a 21-7 deficit in the fourth quarter, took the lead with 23 seconds in regulation, exchanged field goals in the first two overtimes and could not exhale until UTSA’s final pass sailed out of bounds.
In the second OT, Tune scored on a 1-yard keeper. Forced to attempt a two-point conversion, Nathaniel Dell managed to get a toe in bounds. Originally ruled an incomplete pass, the call was overturned by replay to give the Cougars a 35-27 lead. On UTSA’s ensuing possession, Harris hooked up in the corner for a 13-yard touchdown to De’Corian Clark. Harris converted the two-point conversion to force a third OT.
