The Consumer Price Index hit 9.1% in June as Chicagoans continued to manage sky-high prices of food and gas. Now, back-to-school costs are adding up.

“Our school is like 30% low-income, so I would think this would be a significant cost for those students,” Sebastian said. But back-to-school costs are still a burden for many families, said employees at nonprofits that serve kids. Nonprofit Cradles to Crayons Chicago has also noticed a greater need this year for the free school supplies it provides to Chicagoland elementary school students, according to executive director Dawn Melchiorre.
“Chicago shoppers are uneasy, but it’s not stopping them from spending on their kids,” said Deloitte principal Matt Adams. Colored pencils and other school supplies are stocked on July 25, 2022, at an OfficeMax in Lincoln Park.
