The Passaic board of education restricted the flying of flags outside schools this year. One school found a way around the rule.
The Pride flag is not allowed on the flag pole, but is hanging in nearly every window at the front of Passaic PREP.The gay Pride flag seems to be hanging everywhere at the front of Passaic Preparatory Academy - everywhere except the flagpole out front.
Although not everyone on the school board agreed, Rodriguez said his colleagues couldn’t reach a consensus on how to change the policy. The principal at Passaic Preparatory Academy, Stacy Bruce, allowed the Pride flag to be hung in school windows a few weeks before the board decision, and the rainbow banners now cover nearly every window at the front of the school.
Correa-Pagan said she participated in the March 29 demonstration, in which about 75 students marched from Passic PREP to city hall and then to the board of education office on Main Avenue. She there are plans for another demonstration during Pride month. Bruce declined to comment. But she has the support of the school Superintendent Sandra Montanez-Diodonet.
Rodriguez said that it was only after last June’s flag-raising that the board realized it had no policy in place. The board chose to sidestep any future controversy by adopting a policy that would ban just about all flags.“I thought the policy should have been changed,” said Craig Miller, a school board trustee. “There was a process, and ample discussion by the board. Sometimes you agree, and sometimes you don’t. It’s a democracy.
