Don't count on African Swine Fever to benefit U.S. pork farmers anytime soon, as barriers between U.S. pork and the Chinese consumer remain firmly in place

but the company has not provided any exact numbers. “How much production Tyson has shifted to ractopamine-free...will determine how much they can supply to the Chinese market,” says Ortega, but there are other challenges, too. “Even then,” he says, “the recent trade war is creating a lot of uncertainty and affecting U.S. pork exports.” Tyson, along with other chicken producers, were hoping cheap chicken exports could fill the void. But worsening trade relations may make that impossible now too.

, Bloomberg reports. Beef continues to be a strong seller for the company, despite the splash it made with its June announcement of plans to sell a plant-based alternative to chicken. Plant-based industry advocate and executive director of the Good Food Institute, Bruce Friedrich, welcomed the news. “Tyson, which is the second largest meat producer in the world is [now] creating plant-based products,” he remarked, speaking at awith Beyond Meat’s Seth Goldman and Nicole Marquis, CEO and founder of vegan fast casual chain HipCityVeg. Friedrich said the move from Tyson proves that plant-based meat has finally gone mainstream.

Meanwhile, beef is bringing in the numbers. “It would not surprise me [to hear] Tyson had a great quarter with beef,” says Cramsey, who says calf producers continue to earn less than ever while the price of hamburger at the grocery store remains constant. “Someone’s making money in between,” she quips.
