But more than a success in business, McCabe was a hero whose life was cut short because of a selfless act.
Mickey McCabe took a used van from Brooklyn in 1973 and turned it into a booming ambulance business, serving Bayonne for 50 years.
“My lungs were being eaten up by the debris that I inhaled at the site,” McCabe told The Jersey Journal in 2021 of the diagnosis. McCabe’s legacy also included co-founding the New Jersey Emergency Medical Services Task Force as a result of the 9/11 attacks. Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis called McCabe an “absolute icon. ... I’m having a hard time envisioning our city without this pillar.”
When the city took over paying for bulletproof vests, McCabe raised money to put a defibrillator in every police vehicle and also in the schools, Davis said. McCabe sold the family business in 1997 and repurchased it in 1999. The business now answers more than 25,000 calls per year, including 9-1-1 for Bayonne, backup 9-1-1 for Hoboken, 9-1-1 call screening for both municipalities, mutual aid for neighboring communities in Hudson County, and emergency response to the New Jersey Turnpike and Bayonne Bridge, according to the company website.
