THE Department of the Interior and Local Government's 's call for police officials implicated in the illegal drug trade to resign violates their right to due process, according to an official of an international rights organization.Human Rights Watch Philippines senior researcher Carlos Conde said the government and Interior Secretary Benjamin 'Benhur' Abalos Jr. must instead ensure that mechanisms of institutions of accountability are working well.

He said the alleged 300 high-ranking policemen must undergo an investigation, which includes extracting evidence, filing of charges, and prosecution under the country's justice system.'Institutionalizing accountability should be the overriding concern. Not this 'shortcut' or half-hazard na bahala na kayo [police] mag resign ,' said Conde in an interview over ANC's 'Headstart' on Thursday.
