This Chanel bag truly isn’t square—in both senses of the word
Photo: Sasha Lytvyn Status bags are not what they used to be. They’re either really, really big or really, really small — so small they can’t even fit your phone, just an almond or two. They’re fanny packs worn cross-body, or a necklace hung around you’re neck. They’re round. They’re see-through. They’re shaped like a bucket, or a basket, or, in the case of this Chanel bag, an Egyptian pyramid. One thing bags today are not is square, in every sense of the word. They cannot be put into a box.
Karl Lagerfeld, never one for convention, staged one of his last Chanel shows at the magnificent Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The designer loves a theme, so naturally the collection was full of Egyptian references, like pyramids. His gold-and-black-striped, triangle-shaped Chanel bag is a fitting ode to human creation, both practical and impractical.
