Arthur “Jack” Schubarth, an 80-year-old from Vaughn, pleaded guilty to wildlife crimes related to breeding super-sized sheep hybrids for hunting purposes. He smuggled parts of the Marco Polo argali from Kyrgyzstan into the US without an import declaration.

He pleaded guilty to two felony wildlife crimes – conspiracy to violate the Lacey Act and substantively violating the Lacey Act. In a case with the makings of a bizarre wildlife version of ‘Jurassic Park,’ Arthur “Jack” Schubarth, an 80-year-old from Vaughn, finds himself in some deep ‘sheep’ trouble. Schubarth, the mastermind behind Sun River Enterprises LLC, aka Schubarth Ranch, was busy trying to breed super-sized sheep hybrids within the United States for the last 10 years.

He aimed to sell these specially engineered sheep to hunting facilities where they could be hunted in a controlled environment. “This was an audacious scheme to create massive hybrid sheep species to be sold and hunted as trophies,” said Todd Kim, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD). According to court documents, Schubarth smuggled parts of the Marco Polo argali straight from Kyrgyzstan into the US without an import declaration
