Kathy Baughman McLeod, a leader in nonprofits and for-profits, shares how mid-career women can benefit from their careers:
Kathy Baughman McLeod, Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center of the Atlantic Council, at C40 CitiesKathy Baughman McLeod has been a top leader in both nonprofits and for-profits, so when I spoke with her recently about her new job, I heard several insights that we can all benefit from in our own careers, especially mid-career women who want to make a difference and are ambitious. She also shared a few pieces of career advice directly as you’ll see.
: If your current work isn’t resonating with you, and you find something else that does, after careful deliberation, it’s okay to change jobs, as she did from GIS-focused work to policy work. , focused on exploring finding the “right” role for you in your organization before you jump ship. McLeod also made the important point that relocating can build adaptability muscles and I attest to that as well. She moved a lot as a child, since her dad was in the Air Force, so as a survival tool she learned how to figure out a community or an organization.
Here’s how she described what she looks for: “What are the incentives? What are the informal networks of communication here? Mostly, what’s driving people? What are people trying to get done here?
