Kathy Baughman McLeod has been a leader in both nonprofits and for-profits, so when I spoke with her recently, I heard several insights that we can all benefit from in our own careers, especially mid-career women.

: McLeod told me the story about when she was waiting tables in graduate school inand one of her regular customers worked at the EPA and asked her about her own career. Ultimately, that customer connected McLeod to her friend at the EPA who gave McLeod her first “real” job in the environmental space.: McLeod spent that first job running around the state mapping degraded lands, work which has stayed with her throughout her career.

McLeod also made the important point that relocating can build adaptability muscles and I attest to that as well.
