Ask Dennis Hancock what it’s like to work in youth-dominated Silicon Valley, and the 75-year-old will quote Will Rogers.Hancock is an applied physicist with five decades of insight. His specialty — solving problems in one field by tapping into a variety of different technologies — is a coveted commodity.
In the early 1990s, Hancock helped rescue the Hubble Space Telescope, and with it, NASA’s reputation. Though it happened more than 30 years ago, it remains a prescient study in the art and process of innovation. Hancock had never met Wood, but “the guys in the lab down the hall told him to stop by my office to see what I was doing with computer graphics,” Hancock says. Wood walked in, introduced himself and detailed the enormity of the space telescope imaging disaster.

In the professional world, solutions aren’t neatly laid out in textbooks. “It requires a whole different mindset,” says Hancock. “You have to mix curiosity and creativity and learn to integrate disparate pieces of information to form innovative solutions.”
