Author of 'The Art of Beach Volleyball' went on to success as a painter
Dennis Hare, a San Diego State men's volleyball star who became a beach volleyball Hall of Famer and a renowned artist, died March 10 from complications from Parkinson's Disease. He was 77. Hare was one of the early pioneers of professional beach volleyball in San Diego County. In 1981, he authored the popular book, 'The Art Of Beach Volleyball.' Hare was an exceptional baseball and basketball player at Yucaipa High School and San Bernardino Valley College in the early '60s.
In 1974, Hare and partner Fred Zuelich — also a San Diego State men's volleyball player — won the first World Beach Volleyball Championship held in the San Diego Sports Arena. Hare and Zuelich defeated Hall of Fame players Ron Von Hagen and Matt Gage in the final. On an adjacent court, an SDSU alumni team defeated a UCLA alumni team in six-man hard-court hsmr. Hare also served in the Army for two years, where he made the All-Service Team in basketball and volleyball.
