Israel's government maintains it opposes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but can only provide humanitarian aid. It has established a field hospital in Ukraine. Israel has been trying to thread the needle between criticizing Russia's invasion of Ukraine while steering clear of measures that could anger Moscow. Moscow has forces in Syria, where Israel has been conducting a long-running aerial campaign against Iranian-backed militants.
Mr. Zelensky, who is Jewish, addressed Israeli lawmakers in a Zoom call while they sat in their own offices. At the same time, his speech was broadcast on Israeli television and in a central Tel Aviv square that was packed with antiwar protesters waving Ukrainian and Israeli flags.
