We chat with CriminalMindsEvolution star zachgilford opens up about exploring his character's dark nature and joining an established show as a new villain:
With the arrival of Paramount+'s Criminal Minds: Evolution, the one-time CBS procedural enters a new era. In addition to making the move to streaming after 15 seasons on broadcast television, Criminal Minds is tackling its darkest story yet as it follows an UnSub who created a network of serial killers during the coronavirus pandemic. The Behavioral Analysis Unit is already spread thin by a lack of resources, and the emergence of this dangerous new foe only makes things more complicated.
Zach Gilford On Criminal Minds: Evolution Screen Rant: Let’s dive right in. Your character, Elias Voit, is a pretty twisted guy, let’s just say. I imagine that required a darker headspace. Did you have any sort of process on set for how you got into character? In the first two episodes, I was genuinely chilled. I don’t want to give away spoilers but there was a moment where I was like, “Oh, he’s going to be someone to be afraid of.” And so, how much of his backstory did you build up in your head versus what might be on the page?
For sure. As you point out, we don’t always get to go home with these guys. Now it’s a whole new format for the show to follow one person over the whole season. How’d it feel for you to join this established show as a villain they haven’t even done before, like a whole brand-new format?
