Pope John Paul II greets former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev during a private meeting at the Vatican on Oct. 19, 2002. Gorbachev was in Rome for the Third World Nobel Peace Summit and visited with the pope, who died three years later. Gorbachev died Aug. 30.Re: “The gifts of our grandparents,” Other Views, Sunday:
After Mom died, I found the negative and took it to a photo lab. To my surprise, I now had a photo of my grandmother. As we remember the Aug. 30 death of Gorbachev, we recall the political influence that President Ronald Reagan had on the Soviet leader to create a new world order.
