Readers sound off on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke’s interruption of a press conference about the Uvalde school shooting.Re: “Clash marks new era in state politics,” Front Page, Thursday:Some saw Beto O’Rourke standing up for the children and the families of Texas at Gov. Greg Abbott’s press conference the day after the Uvalde shooting. Others saw a candidate shilling for votes while taking advantage of a situation and grandstanding in the middle of a tragedy.
The attempted hijacking of that forum to score partisan political points was disappointing and disgusting. Beto O’Rourke’s actions revealed far more about his character than his words did about his concerns.The response to the horrible tragedy at Uvalde from our GOP leaders is beyond frustrating; it’s lunacy. Every idea they are proposing is already in place in Texas and does nothing. Because they ignore the only issue that makes America unique in gun violence: the proliferation of guns.
The goal can’t be another gun law; it must be reducing gun violence. And we must not stop until we have reduced this problem to the level of other countries. It must be done at the national level; good gun laws in one state are worthless if nearby states have terrible ones.
