Matthew A. Cherry talks Young Love.
Summary Expanding on the Academy Award-winning animated short Hair Love is Max's new animated series Young Love. The series follows the Young family which includes millennial parents Stephen and Angela, their daughter Zuri, and their pet cat Rocky from the original short. The series will follow the Young family through their lives as they balance their careers, marriage, and social issues all while making a better life for themselves.
But as the short got completed, we put it out into the world, and just saw the love it was getting, like tagged every day and pictures of dads reading the book to their daughter, school showing the short film, and then reading the book, we were literally like, "Damn. If all this is happening with the short, we got to try to figure out how to have these characters talk, move, and really see what their inner life is like.
I've never seen an animated series that focused on a millennial couple that didn't have it figured out and had a kid too, and so for us, the tone was the hardest thing, because it could have been a kid show, it could have been an adult show, but we really wanted to make sure that we didn't alienate the people that are fans of the book and the short film.
Brooke Conaway does such a tremendous job as Zuri. She's so authentic in that role. Was it always kind of in the plans to cast a kid to play that role? Matthew A. Cherry: Yeah, all the things you said, man. I mean, damn, you kind of got my script down. Him, being from Cleveland, was really important. Honestly, the show is set on the west side of Chicago, and it's like the Midwest thing is a little different, right? Our people came up from the south, so we talk a certain way, and he's just so great.
Matthew A. Cherry: Yeah. It was just cool, man. I had a pleasure of, when I first moved to LA, I was a PA on Girlfriends, and then I had a chance to work with Tracee again directing on Blackish, and I just love Blackish because, obviously, their comedy is a little different than ours. They're a little bit more broad, but I just love the multi-generational component of that show.
Matthew A. Cherry: Oh, yeah. Man, I think it can contribute a lot. I haven't really seen a grounded animated series like this before, so I hope that it can lead to more grounded sitcom, more animated shows, kind of depicting all different types of diverse groups. But I also think, for us, it was just, we just leaned all the way in, man. If this is about a black family on the west side of Chicago, things got to feel authentic.
