is to apply to safety, match, and reach schools. But what does it really mean to “reach” for a college? Some schools, such as Stanford with a 4.8 percent admit rate, are a reach for everybody. But when most people talk about reach, they mean that a student’s GPA and test scores may fall towards the lower end of a university’s admissions criteria. Reach can, however, be about a lot more than just overcoming the numbers.
“I’m a woman of color. I know I’ve had those moments where I’ve looked at a job listing or I’ve looked at a college and I didn’t feel like I had every checkmark on the list and so I wouldn’t try. We know from studies that we [as women and people of color] feel like we have to meet 100 percent of the qualifications on the list. Because of this, we don’t reach as much,” she says.
This is important because higher education is the clearest path to socioeconomic mobility. “It is important for students to claim their space in institutions that, in the past, were closed to us. For students who are the first in their families to graduate from college, the economic opportunities can have generational change. It’s equally important that college classrooms and dorm rooms are filled with voices and perspectives that represent all of our communities,” Bigham says.
