The new reality for many of them: applying for unemployment benefits, dipping into savings, searching for new work in the middle of a pandemic."Two weeks ago, things were still slow, but nobody had any idea that anything like closures would happen for anybody," says Kary Wayson, a Seattle poet who lost her waitressing job of almost 16 years."I don't question the decision on [the restaurant owner's] part at all. It's just ... the situation.
. Several states are forcing bars, restaurants and event venues to close. The Bay Area was ordered to shelter in place, keeping only essential businesses open. Pimentel says her layoff was amicable, with her bosses saying they'd be happy to have her back when things normalize. But she can't bank on that possibility, whenever it might happen.
"I've never seen what I'm seeing now," he says."Places where we would have stacks of containers, it's just now empty." On Sunday, Wayson, the waitress in Seattle, spent two hours on the phone with the unemployment office. She'd made some mistake on her application and was live-messaging her experience to her former co-workers on a group text.
