After missing four games with neck stiffness, Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez was back in the lineup as designated hitter for Saturday’s game against the Phillies.
Alvarez was sent home early from the Astros’ two-city road trip last week to be examined by doctors in Houston, and thus did not play in a three-game series in Tampa or in Friday’s series opener against the Phillies at Minute Maid Park. Alvarez entered Saturday having played in 20 of the team’s first 26 games this season, with six home runs and 27 RBI in 75 at-bats.Astros manager Dusty Baker said outfielder Chas McCormick, who began a minor-league rehab assignment with Class AA Corpus Christi on Saturday, might need six or seven rehab games before he can rejoin the big league club.
Baker also said that outfielder Michael Brantley, on a rehab assignment with Class AAA Sugar Land, might play some first base in rehab games as preparation to play some first base for the Astros once he returns. Both Brantley and McCormick should be back around the second week of May. The Astros moved struggling first baseman José Abreu down one spot in the batting order to hit sixth in Saturday’s game, four games after they dropped him from the cleanup spot to fifth. In his last seven games prior to Saturday, Abreu batted .179 with seven strikeouts.
