And if the league wants to add teams for the first time since 1998, it will first need to pick two cities to put them in.
David Cone, the 17-year veteran who pitched for the Mets and Yankees and is now a broadcaster, has his own guesses. “The Commissioner, Rob Manfred, talked about once we solved Oakland and once we solve Tampa Bay, then we’ll talk about expansion,” Cone said on the “” podcast. “Well, it looks like maybe those conversations are going to be had. My predictions are, I think Nashville, Tennessee, is probably the No. 1 contender to get an expansion franchise moving forward. And the second one’s kind of still a little bit up in the air. There was a lot of talk of Portland, Oregon, at one point.
Manfred said in 2021 that expansion fees could be in the range of $2.2 billion per team, which is what Sportico estimated as the average MLB franchise value.
