Next up for the Yankees is a weekend series against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Yankees left fielder Alex Verdugo is batting .228 for the season after going 0-for-4 in Wednesday night's 12-3 loss to the Mets.“I hear the normal stuff … ‘You’re a bum!” Verdugo told NJ Advance Media before Wednesday night’s Subway Series game, a 12-3 Mets romp. “It’s funny because I’ll hear other fans stand up for me. ‘Don’t’ listen to him!’”
If Dominguez rakes like he did last September in his eight-game Yankees cameo and again this year for 23 games between his return from Tommy John surgery and oblique strain, the switch-hitting center fielder might be called up from Triple-A and handed a starting job. “I’m not worried about that,” Verdugo said. “The business is the business. At the end of the day, I feel like I’m an everyday player here. I know I’ve scuffled the last 120 at-bats. I’m going to chalk that up to finishing strong. Do what I normally do and I’ll be fine.”Verdugo was hitting .266 for the season after his first game back in Boston since the Red Sox traded him last December, his 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI breakout on June 14. Since, he’s batting .
But Dominguez has hit everywhere he’s been when he’s been healthy the last two seasons, so nothing he does would surprise the Yankees. In 23 minor-league games this season, most while he was on a rehab assignment, Dominguez hit .356 with five homers and 13 RBI. They’ll also be paying attention to Verdugo, who thinks he’s close to a hot streak due to a mechanical tweak that he recently made to his swing. He was 2-for-5 with a double in two games heading into his hitless Wednesday, which included Mets center fielder Harrison Bader robbing him of extra bases in the sixth inning with a tremendous diving catch in left-center field.
