Wyndham Clark knew he wasn’t the fan favorite at the U.S. Open — even among his fellow PGA Tour players.
spoke with SiriusXM Radio on Wednesday and said that during his historic victory, the crowd was decidedly not on his side — and admitted he was a little “pissed off” to hear everyone chanting for Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.
“It kind of pissed me off walking around and everyone was chanting ‘Rickie’ and ‘Rory’ and I get it, they’re fan favorites, but everyone kind of wrote me off,” Clark said. Clark, who entered golf’s third major at Los Angeles Country Club as a relative long shot to win the tournament, ended up finishing one stroke ahead of McIlroy and five ahead of Fowler — the latter of whom shotClark began Sunday tied with Fowler — who despite top-three finishes at all four majors has yet to win one — and one ahead of McIlroy, who hasn’t won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship.
