A WTO panel involved in the ongoing dispute between the world’s 2 largest aircraft manufacturers found that Boeing’s claims for damages over Airbus A380 subsidies are no longer relevant
DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - NOVEMBER 17, 2019: A Dassault Falcon 6X business jet and anAirbus A380-800 passenger plane on display at the 2019 Dubai Airshow. Marina Lystseva/TASS by $2 billion, the panel suggests.
Boeing’s complaint is, in part, that loans made to Airbus for the development of the A380 aircraft represented an unfair advantage, but as the aircraft is no longer being sold the panel finds that this aircraft poses no threat of lost sales for Boeing. Airbus says it is working with the WTO and the European Union to address other elements of Boeing’s claims, including making adjustments for loans issued for development of the A350 aircraft, which competes with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.
Airbus has made its own claim with the WTO of $12 billion per year in damages resulting from what the company claims were effectively U.S. subsidies for the development of the Boeing 737 MAX, 787 and 777X. The EU has requested WTO authorization to issue tariffs on U.S. goods, including Boeing aircraft, with a decision expected in the spring of 2020.
“Airbus continues to encourage the USTR to accept the European Commission’s invitation to engage in meaningful discussions to find a settlement to these disputes. A negotiated settlement is the only way to restore and preserve the free, fair competition and open trade that is essential for an essential and global aviation industry,” the airframe manufacturer said in a statement.
