A person died early Wednesday when a driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 15 in Salt Lake City slammed head-on into their car.

At 1:57 a.m., Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to the crash near 2200 North, close to the Beck Street exit.

A vehicle was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it hit another passenger car head-on, a news release stated. The wrong-way driver was taken to a hospital for survivable injuries and was in serious condition as of Wednesday morning. The driver of the car that was struck was wearing his seat belt but was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was in the car.

Alcohol is being investigated as a “contributing factor” with the wrong-way driver, according to the news release.In 2022, 24 wrong-way crashes were reported throughout Utah, and seven of them were fatal, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.
