World’s first carbon-neutral cement plant swaps pure O2 for ambient air

Substituting ambient air with pure oxygen in the combustion process enables the capture of nearly 100 percent of carbon dioxide emissions.

In a new technological initiative, experts at Thyssenkrupp Decarbon Technologies, an international industrial and technology firm, have developed a “pure oxyfuel” technology to transform sustainable cement production.Brimstone’s carbon-negative Portland cement meets ASTM C150 building industry standardOn April 23, 2024, Thyssenkrupp officially commenced the construction of the “world’s first carbon-neutral cement plants” as part of its lighthouse project.

“The plant here in Lägerdorf demonstrates how it is possible to decarbonize production and boldly implement climate-neutral manufacturing of cement and concrete.” Daniel Günther, Minister-President of Schleswig-Holstein, stated that today, the firm is launching another innovative German industrial project.
