“Bluestone Coke has disregarded the health & safety of our residents for decades,” Mayor Randall Woodfin tweeted. “Their irresponsibility has polluted our community and directly harmed the health of our residents. They don’t give a damn about people.'
Bluestone makes coke, a coal product used in the steel-making process, and there has been a coking plant on the site in North Birmingham for more than 100 years.
While the $925,000 fine levied against Bluestone is the largest doled out by the health department, Woodfin said the penalty was “not justice for those who have been harmed. not even close.” Last week, Bluestone Coke agreed to pay a $925,000 penalty for the air pollution violations at its North Birmingham plant.
