Pepe is credited with causing Little League to change its rules so girls could play on baseball teams.SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT — Little League has honored with its highest award the woman who as a girl is credited with prompting the world’s largest youth sports organization to allow girls to play on baseball teams.
It is not known who might have been the first girl to play Little League baseball but the result of Pepe being denied the opportunity is what changed the landscape. “My coach came to me and told me that Little League said they had to take me off the team or the league would lose its charter,” said Pepe. “I didn’t want to make a hundred kids mad at me, so I had to step down.”
The NOW suit charged Little League with using public land to discriminate against females because it “promulgated, published and enforces a regulation that states “girls are not eligible.” The New Jersey Supreme Court affirmed the decision the following year. Little League’s board recognized the changing social climate and Congress agreed to change the gender clause in federal charter.
