Cynthia Ann Hernandez, 33, pleaded guilty to mail fraud and access devise fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Hernandez — who prosecutors say is also known as Cynthia Roberts — filed at least 29 applications for benefits with the California Employment Development Department under the name of state prison inmates, according to her plea deal.
In the applications, Hernandez claimed the inmates lived and worked in Los Angeles and Orange counties and that their employment and finances had been negatively impacted by the pandemic, according to prosectors. Debit cards tied to the jobless funds were sent to Hernandez’s mailing address, prosecutors said. They estimate she received $515,138 in fraudulent funds.
