Washington wins for the first time in San Antonio since 1999.
On the night of Dec. 11, 1999, the Washington Wizards walked into San Antonio and walked out with a victory. With Kristaps Porzingis looming as large as any Latvian has, and with Deni Avdija exploding during the second half, the Wizards broke their South Texas curse with a 127-106 victory at the AT&T Center. The last time Washington won a road game against the Spurs, Mitch Richmond led the team with 31 points.
Together, they helped Washington win its sixth consecutive game, the longest active streak in the NBA.Keldon Johnson had 26 points, Jeremy Sochan tallied 17, and Zach Collins added 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, but it wasn’t enough to get the Spurs back in the win column.Washington outgunned the Spurs from the 3-point line, hitting 16 triples to the Spurs’ seven.
Sochan was 6-of-7 in the opening quarter. He managed a single attempt in the second quarter, a one-dribble 3-point try that missed. After Sochan’s 30-piece Saturday and hot start Monday, it felt like he was on pace for something bigger. Porzingis played an outsized role in the Spurs’ second-quarter demise. His 7-foot-3 frame in the middle of the Washington zone stymied the Spurs’ attempts to break it.
