With QB atop its wish list, UH hopes transfer portal can deliver
“I’ve got a list,” Holgorsen said. “We’ll be making calls now that we can. There’s a bunch of in there. … We’re looking for the best one. And we’re going to go after that one.”
With Clayton Tune set to end his career in the Independence Bowl and third-stringer Holman Edwards committing to Southern Miss earlier this week, redshirt freshman Lucas Coley is the only other returning scholarship quarterback on the roster. Coley, a transfer from Arkansas last offseason, moved into the backup spot midway through the season. Many inside the program believe Coley still needs another year to develop.
“We probably have to get two at some point because we don’t have very many numbers at that spot right now,” Holgorsen said. “There always needs to be four or five guys in that room that are competing.” “The job has been pretty solidified for three years with Clayton having the outstanding career he’s had and the consistency with which he’s played,” Holgorsen said. “We’re going to miss that. But we have to go out and find the best one and create some competition in the spring. There’s only one way to do that, and that is to bring some guys in.”
