Texas Department of State Health Services says flu season is kicking off earlier this year.
“Vaccination remains our best defense against severe illness from flu, especially for more vulnerable populations like older adults, very young children, people with chronic health conditions and pregnant women,” said Dr. Jennifer Shuford, DSHS interim commissioner. “That’s why we recommend that everyone six months and older receive their flu vaccine each year.
Reports from around the state showing more influenza-like illnesses occurring earlier this year matches flu reports across the country. DSHS says the flu vaccines this season are better equipped to protect against current flu viruses that are circulating. Anyone who feels ill or have flu-like symptoms should stay at home and contact their health care provider. There are also anti-viral treatments available, especially to people who are higher risk of flu complications. Other ways to protect yourself include washing your hands often and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze.
