With a single tweet this morning, President Trump dove deep into the Navy's chain of command

President Donald Trump’s Thursday morning tweet directing Navy leaders to maintain the status of a Navy SEAL acquitted of war crimes charges marks not just an escalation between the White House and the military, but also high-level involvement in a special operations unit's right to choose its members.

“Admiral Green didn’t want there to be any surprises at the SECDEF level or at the White House, so he passed it up the chain of command through [Special Operations Command] and Admiral Gilday and Secretary Spencer,” the defense official said, referring to Navy Secretary Richard Spencer and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael Gilday.

“Admiral Green and Admiral Gilday were clearly doing what was best for the Navy,” Mabus said. “What actions like this by the president do is dishonor all the people who went into combat and didn’t commit war crimes, who kept their honor clean.” “We have a good order and discipline problem that must be addressed immediately,” Green wrote in a July letter to subordinates. In September, Green fired the top three leaders of SEAL Team 7 over their handling of the summer scandal in Iraq. Two of those leaders have since filed a complaint with the Pentagon’s inspector general alleging that Green scapegoated them.
