Will Mueller publicly rebuke Barr, his friend for decades, as America looks on?
appears before Congress on Wednesday, he will, in many ways, be facing off against Attorney GeneralThe two men became close when they worked together at the Department of Justice under President George H.W. Bush, and have “been friends since,” Barr told the Senate in January. Of course that was before Barr publicly misrepresented the special counsel’s report as exculpatory, and announced that Mueller had not provided enough evidence to charge the president with obstruction of justice.
That tantalizing question has animated Democrats in their fight to get Mueller to testify publicly. Lawmakers are seeking clarity about several critical disparities between Mueller’s report and Barr’s four-page summary, including whether it’s true that there was “no collusion” between the Trump campaign and the Russians, as, or if there was simply insufficient evidence to bring charges under the framework of conspiracy law, as stated in the report.
On Wednesday, Democrats will seek to illuminate these gaps, specifically in regard to obstruction. “The report presents very substantial evidence that the president is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors, and we have to present—or let Mueller present those facts to the American people, and then see where we go from there,” House Judiciary Committee Chairmanover the weekend.
Laufman also doesn’t expect Mueller to take the bait when Democrats try to establish daylight between his report and Barr’s characterization. “I expect him to deflect any questions aimed at getting him to critique any statements the attorney general has made regarding the findings or conclusions in the special counsel’s report and, instead, simply focus affirmatively on the findings set forth in the report,” he said.
