While the acting awards seem carved in stone, MarkHarrisNYC weighs in on what surprises the other Oscars categories may bring
In the final weekend of Oscar campaign season, a slight shift in momentum seemed to help some candidates and hurt others—or at least, we pretended it did. It was no particular surprise thatmarched through the BAFTAs with seven wins, including best picture and director; this was always going to be a strong weekend in London for the first British front-runner sinceBong Joon HoTaika Waititiwhich did the same.
These late-in-the-game fluctuations should make this year’s Oscar race more interesting than it feels right now. A year in which there are not just two credible best-picture winners, but four or five, should be suspenseful, and a year in which, by the time the envelopes are opened, five of the seven best-picture nominees that reported their box office will have grossed over $100 million domestically, should be riveting the attention of movie fans more than it is.
In part, that may have to do with the law of unintended consequences. This year the Oscars are on February 9—that’s by far the earliest that they’ve ever been, and significantly earlier than they will be for the next two years, when they will revert to the last couple days of February. Moving up the date pleased those who have been arguing for a shorter season and making the case that the Oscars always come too late to be relevant.
There’s no question that the acting awards are, this year, contributing to the been-there-seen-that vibe around the Oscars.have been entrenched as front-runners for so long—they all won at the Globes, the SAG Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards, the BAFTAs—that any other result on Sunday would be a shock.
