The showrunner of Criminal Minds: Evolution reveals whether the series could return for season 2 and beyond. Delving deeper into the central BAU team, the Paramount+ revival picks up roughly from where the original series ended in 2020 for a chilling look at how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected serial killers and caused them to change their tactics.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Deadline after the premiere episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution, showrunner Erica Messer discussed whether the revival could potentially extend for future episodes. Messer gave an optimistic update, saying that the story could potentially continue for as long as the core cast wants to be involved. Although there are a few absences, the cast of Criminal Minds: Evolution brings back several familiar faces.
I think it could go on for as long as this group wants to do it. We’re all energized, excited, and loving what we’re doing. I think as long as we want to keep doing it, I don’t see why we shouldn’t.What More Criminal Minds: Evolution Could Look Like Prior to its debut, there was a lot of discussion about how the revival would be different from the original. In the first two episodes at least, it's clear how Criminal Minds: Evolution benefits from streaming.
Criminal Minds: Evolution season 2 would likely deepen that thread if it happens, and it could potentially bring back fan-favorite characters like Reid. Although he gets mentioned in the revival's debut, he's nowhere to be seen. That's partly due to the fact that Matthew Gray Gubler had scheduling conflicts that prevented him from reprising the role, but that could be fixed in the future. From a narrative standpoint, the revival is rich with possibility.
Perhaps the BAU does get shut down, with its members forced into retirement or reassigned. Alternatively, it's possible that they don't catch their mysterious killer at the end of the first installment. There are a few good options for where the story could go and, in a positive for fans, Messer makes clear that the cast and crew are open for more of Criminal Minds: Evolution.
