Trying to rescue baby animals before you are certain the mother is not returning reduces their chances of survival.
My sister called me a few weeks ago in a panic. A barn swallow had built a mud nest over her front door, and she could see the four babies. She said they looked gaunt and their mouths were open as if they were starving. She hadn’t seen the mom for hours and asked what she should do. Very often, we want to help wildlife — the lone baby deer sitting under a bush or the bird who has fallen out of a nest. But often, the fawn is waiting for its mom to come back from feeding.
So, unless wildlife is in obvious danger, watch and observe, as the mother is usually somewhere around, perhaps waiting for you to leave before she returns.
