At least five lawsuits related to the Smokehouse Creek Fire were filed this week in Texas.

Butt of pole blamed for starting the Smokehouse Creek Fire after it was extracted from the ground were filed against Xcel Energy, Southwestern Public Service Company and Osmose Utilities Services, Inc Xcel Energy this week in Texas. That's in addition to one filed last week by a woman whose house was destroyed in Canadian.Bobby and Bennita Skidmore, Bruce and Mary Skidmore, and S&S Land and Cattle filed their lawsuit Monday in Roberts County.began Feb. 26.

The landowners claim "an old, rotten utility pole, owned and operated by the Defendant Xcel and/or SPS and located northwest of Stinnett, Texas, broke off below ground level and fell toward the ground. The electrical conductors attached to that fallen pole then contacted the ground, causing an electrical fault and arcing that ignited the Smokehouse Creek Fire."

The plaintiffs said they own approximately 75,000 acres of land burned by the Smokehouse Creek Fire. They also claim to have had livestock, personal property, structures and trees destroyed by the wildfire. In his lawsuit, legendary rancher John "Pete" Bonds took exception to Xcel's claim that it was not negligent.
