Interviews with fathers for this article, anonymized due to sensitivity of the content, support the observation that narratives about fatherhood are regressive. Not surprisingly, attitudes towards fathers at workplaces have not been encouraging. Louis says that he regretted that decision greatly. “I spent the first 3 months travelling 15 minutes to and from the office on my lunch just to spend 30 minutes with my daughter and my partner, only to return to the office to silent complaints of my extended absence. Eventually I left.”
“Comments included things like the following which fundamentally misunderstand the nature of looking after young children, such as ‘Wow – three months off work? I would have loved a holiday like that!’, or ‘What are you going to do with all that time?’. I even got comments like ‘Your priorities are all wrong. You should be focussing on providing for your family.
